Busker bugs violin lover
Ces, violin maker, http://www.kulviolins.com
A young violinist busking to save for university has had an unexpected setback.
Juliet Ayre's been asked not to play in a prime spot outside Nelson's Michael Hill jewellers, even though the chain's founder is passionate about the instrument.
"The manager sent out one of her workers to complain about my playing and ask me to move away. The music was too loud and the customers were complaining," says Ayre.
She's popular too, making $40 to $50 an hour.
The irony is that the chain's founder once dreamed of being a concert violinist.
He even runs an international violin competition. But in a clash between music and money - it's no contest.
Nelson's mayor believes buskers add to the city's charm, and says only the council has the legal right to move them on.
"We say to them stay 20 odd minutes, wherever you are and then move on, especially if you've only got one tune," says Paul Matheson.
Juliet has moved on because there are plenty of other places where her music is appreciated.

Celebrity?
Being violin makers and repairers, we often are speaking about old Italian violins. These undoubtedly are superior, but they are old . . . I described some aspects concrning Ideal violin sound in my article. Anyway, it undoubtedly remains food for thought .

Francesca Mountfort looks as though she has just stepped out of a music box to play her cello for her solo show, Nervous Doll Dancing.
"The name comes from a piece I worked on with dancer and filmmaker UJ Lee for the Dance Your Socks Off Festival," says Mounfort. "It was a dance piece that had a nervous edge to it and included clockwork dolls.
"We put the elements together and and ended up with Nervous Doll Dancing. I kept the name because it sums up my music."
Mounfort's music was born in the elecroacoustic studio of Victoria University.
"I started playing other people's compositions for cello and electic backing but I wanted to develop my own style. I wanted to develop a solo act that wasn't just cello."
Armed with two very different instruments, Mounfort creates a soundscape with her computer and accompanies it with her cello. Her melodies are ethereal as she experiments with textures and sound. Occasionally she adds haunting vocals that sound as if they come from the Sirens of Greek mythology.
Mountfort released her debut CD, also called Nervous Doll Dancing, last year. While it is her first solo offering, she has appeared on many other local CDs recently.
"Wellington's a small place," she says. "It's easy to meet people and get involved in lots of different stuff. The cello is such a versatile instrument. By itself it sounds beautiful but it also works well with other sounds."
